Thread Painting

I’m pleased to show you some of my thread painting creations! Click on any of the photos to see more details. I encourage you to come back often to see what’s new!

Flight of the Little Yellow Bird

A yellow bird in the blue sky invokes thoughts of joy, escape, change, and freedom. The bird was thread painted on the blue batik. This piece measures 15.5 x 15.5 inches.

The Eye of the Storm

The world is full of chaos and sharp edges and it takes an “eye” or a centering place to help a person find their way. That eye can be a religion, music, or even art; perhaps all of those things, but each must find that calmness within. This piece measures 34.5 x 31.25 inches.

For Rene

I made this as a tribute to my friend Rene. She was a fellow quilter and a very dear friend who passed away last year. This piece measures 16.5 x 41.5 inches.

Magic Feather

Like the magic feather given to Dumbo in the movie, the feather in this piece is a reminder that we can do whatever we set our minds to do. This piece measures 34 x 28.5 inches.

Phoenix Feather

The mythical bird, the phoenix, arises from the ashes to live again. It is a reminder that, even after devastating experiences, we can begin again. This piece measures 22.5 x 27.5 inches.

Freedom Flight

I explored and experimented with free-motion embroidery, sometime called thread painting or thread drawing for this bluebird in flight in a wooded area. It is such a treat to see a flash of bright blue swoop through the woods on a spring day that I wanted to capture the wonder of such a moment in this artwork. This piece measures 15 x 15 inches.

New Beginnings

This Phoenix feather seems to be floating in swirling tongues of fire. I love the symbolism of the mythical bird, the Phoenix, rising from the ashes to the beginning of a new life. When suffering a catastrophic event in life, the challenges seem endless, yet it is possible to recover and start anew like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. This wall hanging is a reminder that new life can happen! This piece measures 22.5 x 27.5 inches.

Clown Fish

Clown fish find safety by hiding in the coral reef, and the coral reef benefits from chemicals emitted by the clown fish. This symbiotic interaction reminds me of how human relationships should work. This piece measures 18 x 20 inches.

Summer Dragonfly

This form of free-motion embroidery is a new technique for me; some might call it thread painting or thread drawing, but (whatever it is called) I love the results! The summer dragonflies, with their lacy and shiney wings that reflect the sun so brilliantly, have always been a fascinating sight to me. When I first learned this technique I knew it was the perfect method to use to capture the beauty of a dragonfly. This piece measures 15 x 15.5 inches.
